Both groups were challenged with a difficult test designed for 8th grade students. The group who was praised for their effort tried very hard, although they naturally made plenty of mistakes. The group who was praised for intelligence became discouraged when they made mistakes, seeing these errors as a lack of ability and a sign of failure.

The idea is to help your child understand that their fear of failure is ungrounded for the most part. Your child will also realize he can do things to prevent negative outcomes which gives him a sense of power and control.


Many would argue that it is not failure we fear. Rather, we fear the imagined negative consequences that follow the failure. This fear leads to having low self-esteem, avoiding challenging tasks and feeling pessimistic.


Normally, fear is a self-protection mechanism. It leads you to avoid potentially negative situations. However, fear of failure will stop you from trying, create self-doubt, stall your progress and could lead you to go against your values.


These are just some of the reasons people suffer from fear of failure. Most of the time, people can defeat this fear with some tools and skills provided by life coaches or counselors. But for some, this fear becomes an extreme problem.


When you need to make an important decision, fear of choosing wrong can lead to delays or no decision at all. Fear of failure can also lead to shrinking back from possible opportunities that can improve your career.


In its extreme form, fear of failure is termed as atychiphobia. Individuals coping with atychiphobia can experience crippling self-doubt and extreme fear of failure due to the perceived ridicule one might face after a failure.


When we embrace our failures, we learn from them. That knowledge is the key to succeeding further down the line. So, really, the more we fail, the more we will succeed. Freeing up our minds by releasing the fear gives us license to be creative and bold.

In order to deal with failure, you must also have great compassion for yourself. Every human being makes mistakes, so if you make a mistake or find yourself on the wrong path, know that you can always redirect. Beating yourself up will never help you overcome failure, but recognizing why you might have failed and learning from it will always help.


One way to lessen the fear of failure is to set smaller goals that are more realistic to accomplish. This might mean setting a goal to get a higher grade on your next test or to understand one new concept in a class that is difficult for you.

Some will experience it and not even try to take action. Others will feel it in the middle of doing that which they fear. No matter how the fear of failure presents itself, one thing is for sure, it is a crippling and demoralizing feeling that no one should have to endure.


However, this type of fear is not what defines the fear of failure. Also known as atychiphobia, fear of failure occurs when an underlying fear becomes so great that it keeps you from moving forward to achieve your goals and aspirations.
