On July 27, 2018 we kayaked from the Assateague Island National Seashore into the Maryland State Sinepuxent Wildlife Management Area and a small island known to the locals as Bird Island. This was not our original destination, but while preparing our gear at the Old Ferry Landing in the National Seashore, we spoke to two women just returning from early morning paddles. One woman shared pictures of baby brown pelicans at Bird Island. The other, while paddling into coves on the right side of Old Ferry Landing, reported spotting roseate spoonbills. Both sightings intrigued us. A boat trip to Smith Island two months ago included a visit to a large nesting colony of pelicans. It was exciting to think of seeing some more. In addition, roseate spoonbills are our favorite Florida bird. Seeing some in Maryland would be a bird watching coup.

Sometimes the Sinepuxent Bay is riddled with white caps, however this hot humid Saturday morning featured a light breeze and gentle swells. . Arriving at the island, we quickly found five brown pelican babies nestled among a potpourri of shorebirds. The birds of Bird Island are very noisy, and the smell worse, but for nature lovers the sights are delightful and hypnotic.

Successfully completing our first goal of baby pelican sightings we turned to our search for roseate spoonbills. Paddling and floating around the North end of Great Egging Island a blue crab in the water was pulling itself up on the shore. Detecting our presence he quickly retreated back into the water.

Do you think that a stable was a nice place to be born? (Field answers.) Well, why do you think Mary and Joseph picked, a stable? Do, you think they just liked the way it looked? (Field answers.) No ... they picked the stable because there wasn't any place else for them to stay in Bethlehem that night. The inn - the hotel was full and Mary was about to have baby Jesus. They needed to get inside somewhere, out of the cold for the birth of the baby, and the stable was where they ended up.

We have something special for you tonight. There are many stories about the animals in the stable on Christmas, Eve, and tonight, you're going to hear some of them straight from the horse's mouth ... well, sort of. If you'll help me, we will call some animals up here tonight, and they will tell us about the birthday of the baby Jesus.

Donkey: Besides, there's stuff about us donkeys that few people know. For example, we're very protective. I walked very carefully with Mary on my back - I didn't want to fall and hurt her or the baby.

Donkey: Well, our protective side, it makes us just a little bit like baby Jesus. Jesus came to this world to take care of us and protect us. And now, even if we die, we, know that we will live in happiness with him.

Sheep: That's right, we were used in ceremonies that forgave the sin of- the people- and that's something the baby Jesus came to do - forgive people's sins once and for all. And let me tell you - we sheep appreciated it.

J. J.: Maybe we dogs don't give milk or sing songs - maybe our coats don't make good blankets, maybe we're too small to ride on but we belong, brother we belong in the stable at the feet of the baby Jesus!

Pastor: J. J., you've convinced me. And in thanks, we will sing the last verse of our song in your honor, and in honor of all those who follow the baby Jesus. (MUSIC BEGINS)

In addition, mothers expressed a lack of competence and self-efficacy surrounding postpartum physical activity engagement with concerns regarding their physical capacity. It is important to also note that over half of our mothers gave birth by caesarean section which may have a divergent recovery path compared to vaginal birth (Roy, 2014) and be further reflected in physical activity confidence. Liva et al. (2021) found that new mothers struggled to gauge appropriate physical activity engagement which led to over or underestimating personal capacity for physical activity. In post-program interviews immediately after our intervention, participants noted an increase in confidence in engaging in physical activity with a specific improvement in capability to be active with their baby. Given that many mothers found their baby to be the greatest hindrance to their ability to engage in physical activity before attending this exercise program, this is an important finding and suggests enhanced physical activity self-efficacy. There is a strong association between physical activity self-efficacy and physical activity engagement in postpartum women (Cramp & Bray, 2011). In addition, the guilt that is often associated with taking time to engage in physical activity pursuits within the expectations of motherhood (Bean & Wimbs, 2021), is reduced when the infant is part of the physical activity practice. The ability to engage in physical activity despite the barrier of having a child present is important for helping mothers fit physical activity into their busy lives, given that issues with childcare was a barrier among approximately one quarter of new mothers in the first year postpartum (Evenson et al., 2009).

Having followed up with these women six months post-program, it is interesting to note that despite increased confidence in engaging their baby in their physical activity, this had once again become a barrier as children became more mobile. This has been shown previously in new mothers, with physical activity barriers changing from 3 to 12-months postpartum due to the added challenge of a more mobile baby (Evenson et al., 2009). It is therefore important to continue to discuss ways to include children in physical activity programming over changes in growth and development. 041b061a72
